ONION POHA OR KANDA POHA RECIPE
Every Mumbaikar's favourite simple and easy breakfast recipe
Onion Poha is a popular Indian snack item prepared in many states in India. Originated from Maharashtra it is popularly known as Kanda poha in many places in Mumbai, Maharashtra. This healthy Indian dish is usually prepared for morning breakfast or evening tea time snacks as it is an extremely simple dish and takes hardly a few minutes to prepare. In different Indian states, it has different names like aval, avalakki, atukulu.
So Poha is basically flattened rice or beaten rice. It is flat light dry flakes and considered to be originated in the Malwa region itself. When you soak these flat dry rice flakes in water for few seconds they absorb water and when you drain them they transform into this soft puffy thicker rice. These are then used for cooking onion poha.
As far as I know, being a Mumbaikar myself all Mumbaiker’s love eating poha as we all have a busy life and most of us just skip breakfast and leave for work. How to make onion poha at home?
Method:
Step 1
How to make poha puff?
Take thick poha (easily available in the market) which is specially used for onion poha in a strainer and wash it once for few seconds with normal temperature water then keep it aside for 5 mins and let the excess water drain out completely. Don’t wash it too many times and do not rub the poha while washing it as it will ruin the look and taste of the poha making it too soggy and mushy. Use gentle hands and wash it only once with water, you can instantly see the difference when the thin dry flakes transform into puffed poha.
STEP 2
How to cook poha?
- Take a pan and keep the flame medium, heat 2 tbsp of oil add peanuts and roast it for few seconds then remove the roasted peanuts from the pan and keep it aside.
- Now in the same pan add Mustard seeds in medium hot oil and let it crackle for few seconds.
- Add finely chopped green chilies and curry leaves saute for few secs then add thinly sliced onions and let it fry until translucent then add a ½ piece of chopped tomato and fry.
- Add peanuts and boiled cube potato at this stage then, add salt to taste and turmeric powder stir fry everything for few secs.
- Now add nicely drained poha in the pan make sure there is no water remaining in the poha, do not squeeze and drain the poha.
- Mix and stir it well with the mixture using gentle hands for few secs. Keep a check on the flame so that the poha doesn’t stick on the pan.
- Now switch off the flame and garnish it with freshly chopped coriander leaves and half cut fresh lemon.
Note: Do not add lemon juice in poha as it can spoil the dish after a few hours. Instead, serve poha hot with half cut fresh lemons so that you can squeeze as much as you like.
Overall this dish has a beautiful yellow color and it is really delicious to eat.
Happy Cooking ❤
